Autumn Beer Picks from Bill Lacy

Our beer columnist Bill Lacy is back with all the beer you need in your life this autumn, Read up on his top new brews, beer takeovers and events coming soon.

For many, the highlight of autumn 2022 will be the World Cup. Here’s our pick of three beers that’ll help steel the nerves and get you through the tournament, hopefully to the final.

  • New from Brooklyn Brewery is Brooklyn Pilsner. A crisp, bright, refreshing and session lager that’s perfecting for whetting the whistle as you cheer on your side. 4.6% in strength, it’s a thirst quencher.

  • St Austell Brewery’s Korev – Cornish for beer – is in tune with the elements. As fresh and crisp as the coastal breeze and the colour of the morning sun, this is a long-stay lager, joy in a glass.

  • Now for the big guns, one to drink in times of celebration – Le Chouffre Blond may be a mighty 8% but it’s sophisticated and has had a global following for 40 years. A golden beer, that’s lightly hoppy in taste, with citrus notes and a spiced note to finish – goal!

From The Ashes at Gipsy Hill Taproom

BBQ and beer is a winning combination and that exactly what’s going on at Gipsy Hill Taproom in Crystal Palace, South London, for the next three months. From The Ashes is in residence until January 2023, serving up the ever popular Del Piero - pork doughnut. It’s a game changer, and just the snack to accompany a pint of Hepcat, a classic session IPA, full bodied, with juicy, fruity notes. That’s not forgetting Hunter and Bandit, house beers paired with dishes on a weekly-changing menu, including Smoked BBQ Sharing Platter and BBQ Cauli Florets.

It’s a good idea to book, particularly given the start of the World Cup on 20th November. Games will be shown on a big screen in the brewery, directly opposite the taproom.
