Review: Bar Douro, Express Menu

Already in our little black book there's now yet more reason to visit Bar Douro at London Bridge. Known as a key hotspot for Portuguese food and wine in London, it has just launched a new express lunch menu priced at just £16.50 for two courses and £18.50 for three.

The counter-top style restaurant is surrounded by traditional Portuguese azulejos tiles, creating a cosy, intimate atmosphere. There is a counter running along the restaurant which is a great spot if you like the theatre of watching chefs work.

The set lunch menu includes a choice of Bar Douro classics such as the Croquetes de Alheira with smoked Portuguese sausage, the Milho Frito with crispy polenta and fermented red pepper sauce or the Pataniscas de Bacalhau, salt cod fritters.

Other small plates include Bacalhau à Bras, Portuguese salt cod hash and Espetada de porco com batatas, and a grilled pork skewer.

Vegetarians can enjoy the Arroz de Cogumelos Selvagens, a wild mushroom rice dish, but we would recommend it to omnivores too; it is full of flavour and a real umami bomb.

To finish, we had one of the iconic Pastel de Nata, a traditional Portuguese tart. These were served warm, freshly-baked, and were utterly delicious.

Staff were warm, friendly and knowledgeable, recommending a delicious Alvarinho that balanced beautifully with the dishes. Bar Douro is tucked away from the bustle of Borough and is a lovely little bolthole, whether for an escape from the office for an hour or a more leisurely time with friends; the new menu is an absolute bargain and gives you the perfect excuse for a lunchtime treat.

Menu available Tuesday-Friday 12pm-4.30pm
