Review: Brother Marcus, Covent Garden

Modern Eastern Mediterranean restaurant Brother Marcus has launched their fifth site in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, with its much-loved dishes full of flavours from across Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.

Known for their Eastern Med take on brunch and casual small plates, their Covent Garden location is their biggest site yet, with a roof terrace and two terraces overlooking The Yard between Mercer Street and Upper St Martin Lane, next to Seven Dials.

It's a great all-day option for this part of town. Weekdays at the two-floor venue start with breakfast before moving into all-day mezze; at the weekend brunch is served until 4pm, when the menu changes to sharing plates.

Breakfast dishes include their now famed sweet potato fritters, smokey shakshuka, fried chicken rosti and breakfast pittas with fillings of labneh, Kasundi jam, kofta, eggs, spinach and feta. Later in the day you can enjoy sharing plates such as these:

Pan-fried halloumi, watermelon jam & mint

Grilled lamb kofta, aubergine begendi, Aleppo butter & spring onion

Roasted chicken, sun-dried tomato harissa, fresh herb salad, labneh & nigella seeds

Crispy aubergine skewer, shatta herb sauce, labneh & grape molasses

Staff are knowledgeable and friendly, happy to advise on food and drink choices.

Sweet options include the baklava sandwich (shown here as a snack version) with pistachio ice cream & honey cream, and a tahini cheesecake, kataifi, and thyme poached rhubarb.

They also offer Marcus’ Choice, a specially curated set menu, and a pre-theatre menu of the rip & dip platter + 2 mezze dishes for £25 from 5-7pm Tuesday to Friday. Don't miss the deliciously earthy roasted beetroot houmous, herb oil& Urfa chilli.

The new space has two bars - one on each floor - with drinks utilising the signature Brother Marcus flavours of Eastern Mediterranean herbs, spices and liquors, as well as a long list of Greek wines.

Cocktails on the menu include the Mavro Daquiri, made with Plantation 3 Stars, Cointreau, homemade blackberry, ginger syrup & lime juice, and the Mov Levanta, a pink peppercorn infused gin with damson syrup, lemon juice & lavender foam. They also have a selection of non-alcoholic cocktails, coffee, juices and smoothies.
